Buyers can’t inspect the work,
so they inspect the brand.

HVAC company branding has to work where homeowners decide: the truck in the driveway, the yard sign, the Google profile and the reviews. The FTC tells homeowners to consider only licensed and insured contractors, so your license number and real reviews belong in the design. I design names, logos and brand identities for HVAC companies, roofers and law firms in the US, working remotely. You start with a free 30-minute call in your time zone, then get a fixed written proposal.

Branding a local service business, where buyers check you first

Local service brands are judged up close. A homeowner can’t inspect a heat pump or a roof deck, and a client can’t grade a legal strategy, so they judge the signals around the work: the truck, the sign, the uniform, the invoice and the reviews, and whether they look like one company.

The FTC’s advice to homeowners is to consider only licensed and insured contractors, confirm the license with the state or county, read reviews with a critical eye and be wary of anyone who knocks because they are “in the area.” A contractor brand has to look established at a glance and show its license number, insurance and real reviews where buyers look for them.

Search is the other storefront. Google asks that your Business Profile name match the name on your storefront, website and stationery, with no taglines, service or location words added. In Local Services Ads, which list HVAC, roofing and lawyer categories, profile quality includes your rating, number of reviews, response time and use of high-quality images. The name, logo and photos you choose now show up there later. Unsure how much to change? Read rebrand or refresh.

  • Design the truck for a glance, not a readA wrap is seen from a lane away. Keep it to the name, the trade, one phone number or web address and the license line your state requires. Before picking colors, look at the other trucks in your service area: if they all use blue and red with a snowflake and a flame, a different color and mark will stand apart.
  • California: license number on trucks and adsCalifornia’s licensed contractors, including C-20 HVAC and C-39 roofing, must show their business name and license number on commercially registered work vehicles in at least 72-point type (or three-quarters of an inch high and wide), and the license number in all advertising. Plan the wrap and ads around that line.
  • Texas HVAC: two-inch letters on both sidesTexas requires AC and refrigeration contractors to show the company name and its affiliated licensee’s license number in letters at least two inches high on both sides of every vehicle used for the work, put the license number in most advertising and a “Regulated by” TDLR notice on proposals, invoices and contracts.
  • Texas roofing ads can’t promise to cover the deductibleUnder the Texas Business and Commerce Code, it is a Class B misdemeanor to advertise or promise to pay, waive or rebate an insured’s property insurance deductible without the insurer’s consent. Keep storm-season slogans, door hangers and yard signs to promises you can legally make.
  • Law firms: names and ads have their own rulesUnder ABA Model Rules, trade names can’t mislead or imply a government link, “certified specialist” claims must name the certifier, and ads name who is responsible. New York has allowed law firm trade names since June 24, 2020. Texas lawyers must file non-exempt ads with the State Bar within 10 days of dissemination.
  • Reviews: earned, never boughtThe FTC’s rule on consumer reviews, in effect since October 21, 2024, bans fake reviews, reviews paid for on the condition of a set sentiment, undisclosed reviews by insiders and review suppression through threats. Build the review request into the brand instead: the invoice, the follow-up text, the leave-behind card.

Questions founders ask

What does HVAC or roofing company branding include?

The logo, color, type and voice, shown where homeowners see you, such as trucks, uniforms, yard signs and invoices, as far as your scope covers, plus a logo that still reads as a small Google profile photo. Good HVAC or roofing company branding also makes trust signals easy to find, such as your license number, insurance and reviews. A logo usually takes 2–4 weeks and a full brand identity 4–10 weeks. Naming is a separate service, and a website build is not included.

Does my license number have to be on my trucks and ads?

In some states, yes. California requires the business name and license number on commercially registered work vehicles, and the license number in all advertising. Texas requires the affiliated licensee’s number and the company name on both sides of every vehicle used for AC and refrigeration work. Rules differ by state and trade, so your licensing board has the final word. Plan the license line into the truck, yard sign, invoice and ad templates from the start.

What is different about law firm branding?

The name and the claims are regulated. Under ABA Model Rule 7.1 and its comment, a trade name must not mislead or imply a link to a government agency, and Rule 7.2 limits “certified specialist” claims. Your state’s version of the rules decides, and some states, such as Texas, review lawyer ads. On Google, lawyers are a professional category in Local Services Ads, where headshots are among the requirements to go live with pre-badge ads, so plan portraits with the identity.

Should the company name include HVAC, roofing or my city?

It can, but know the trade-off. The USPTO calls descriptive names weak and often not federally registrable, and Google doesn’t allow service or location words to be added to a Business Profile name unless they are part of your real-world name. A suggestive or invented name is easier to protect; the trade and the service area can go in the tagline and on the truck instead. For law firms, the ABA notes that a trade name with a place in it, like “Springfield Legal Clinic,” may need a statement that it is not a public legal aid organization.

Does a Google badge matter for a local service brand?

Yes, if you run Local Services Ads: Google places businesses still finishing onboarding below those that have the badge. Google now uses one Google Verified badge and has dropped the money-back guarantee tied to its older Google Guarantee badge for services booked from December 7, 2025. Ranking also weighs high-quality images, so real photos of your crew, trucks and work, in your brand colors, may help.

How much does branding cost for an HVAC company or law firm?

It depends on the scope: a logo, a full identity or a rebrand, and how many trucks, signs, uniforms and documents the brand needs on day one. After a free 30-minute call you get a fixed written proposal with one price, the timeline and the deliverables. The guide to brand identity cost in 2026 explains typical market ranges.
