Packaging designUpdated

Packaging made for the shelf,
with room for every required line.

As a product packaging designer, I design the labels, boxes, cans and pouches that carry your brand to the shelf and the doorstep. I plan the front of the pack around the required details: in the US, FDA-regulated packaged food must show the name of the food and the net quantity on the front panel, the net quantity usually in its bottom 30%. Then I build the range so new flavors and sizes fit, and hand over print-ready files. It suits founders launching or redesigning a consumer product.

What you get, in 2 to 4 weeks

  • Front-of-pack designThe face buyers see first: your logo, the product name, the flavor or variant and the net quantity, laid out to read at shelf distance and as a small photo online.
  • Back and side panelsIngredients, nutrition or usage, your company details and the barcode, set in clear type with room for every required line.
  • LabelsNeed a label designer? Labels for jars, bottles, tins and pouches, laid out with the same front and back rules as a box or a can.
  • A system for the rangeThe CPG packaging branding for your range: color, type and layout rules for flavors and sizes, so the next product looks like part of the same family.
  • Print-ready filesFinal artwork set up on your printer’s dieline, plus the source files, all yours.

Is it right for you?

Right for you if

  • You’re launching a CPG product (food, drink, beauty or pet care) and need packaging that looks like a real brand on the shelf and online.
  • You have a logo, but your labels look homemade or every product looks different.
  • You’re adding flavors or sizes and want a system that keeps the range consistent.
  • You sell in Saudi Arabia or the UAE and need Arabic and English on the same pack.

Questions founders ask

How much does packaging design cost?

It depends on the scope: how many packs and labels, how many flavors or sizes, and in how many languages. After a free 30-minute call you get a fixed written proposal with one price, the timeline and the deliverables, so the price never changes mid-project.

How long does packaging design take?

Usually 2 to 4 weeks for the design, with weekly check-ins in your time zone and two revision rounds per phase. Printing comes after the final files, so count it in when you plan your launch.

Should I hire a freelance packaging designer or an agency?

Compare the same things either way: packaging work in a category close to yours, a plan for the next flavors and sizes, one fixed price and who owns the source files. I’m a brand designer and the founder of Wolfpixel, and I lead a design team for founders in the US and the Middle East, with 350+ projects across 50+ countries behind us. Whether it’s packaging design for a small business or a full range of boxes and cans, you get one fixed proposal and full ownership of the files.

What has to be on a product label in the US?

On FDA-regulated food for people (not meat, poultry, egg products, spirits, 7%+ ABV wine or beer with malted barley and hops), name and net quantity go on the front panel, the quantity in metric and US units in its bottom 30% on panels over 5 sq in. Name and address, ingredients and allergens can go on the panel to its right, at least 1/16 inch high. Cosmetics are similar and, since Dec 29, 2024, need a US address, phone or online contact for adverse events. FTC rules cover other consumable home and personal care goods: identity, net contents and maker, packer or distributor name and address.

Can you design packaging for Saudi Arabia, the UAE or Europe?

Yes. I set Arabic and English on the same pack, with right-to-left layouts; a logo with no Arabic version yet is a bilingual logo project first. In Saudi Arabia, SFDA.FD/GSO 9 requires food labels in Arabic, and any English must sit alongside it and say the same thing. In the UAE, food labels must be in Arabic or in Arabic and English; UAE-approved Arabic stickers are accepted. In the EU, required food information needs an x-height of at least 1.2 mm (0.9 mm if the largest surface is under 80 cm²). My closest work for Europe is ChocoBloom, wrappers for a chocolate shop in France.

Can I still print the recycling symbol on my pack?

Check first. For products and packaging made after October 4, 2026, California’s SB 343 allows the chasing arrows or another recyclable claim only if the item is regularly collected and processed for recycling in the state. On July 14, 2026 a federal court barred the state’s Attorney General from enforcing it while the case continues; the law still stands. In the EU, the packaging regulation that has applied since August 12, 2026 adds a harmonized material label from August 12, 2028 at the earliest. Ask your supplier where the material is recycled, and your adviser to check the claim.

Do I need a barcode and a trademark before the pack is printed?

Usually a barcode, yes; a trademark depends on where you sell. GS1 US says its barcodes identify you as the brand owner, which retailers look for, and it sells single barcodes if you have only a few products. I place the barcode so it doesn’t sit between the FDA’s required statements on the information panel. Amazon Brand Registry asks for a pending or registered trademark and a logo with your brand name permanently affixed to the product or packaging, so the name belongs in the pack artwork itself. Your lawyer files the trademark; I hand over clean files for it.
