Branding for US businesses, from Miami to Boise

The US runs on small companies. The SBA Office of Advocacy counts 36.2 million small businesses, 99.9% of all US businesses, employing 45.9% of private-sector workers. By jobs, the largest private industry sector is health care and social assistance, with 23.3 million jobs in 2025; the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 2.2 million more by 2035, and about 927,000 more in professional, scientific and technical services. Those are the two sectors BLS expects to add the most jobs, so if you run a clinic or a consulting firm, plan a brand that stands apart from the newcomers.

Miami-Dade is one of the busiest US counties for new business applications. Census Bureau data show 135,758 business applications in Miami-Dade County in 2025, second only to Los Angeles County. It is also multilingual: the Miami-Dade Beacon Council reports that about 66% of residents speak Spanish at home and 54% were born outside the US, and it publishes its own site in English, Spanish, Haitian Creole and Portuguese. A Miami brand has to plan for that from the first call.

The rest of the country brings different briefs, from space and research in Huntsville and Knoxville to car manufacturing in South Carolina and semiconductors in Boise. The process is the same in Harrisburg, Greenville or Chattanooga: I work remotely, with calls in your time zone. If your US company is expanding to the UAE or Saudi Arabia, read how an Arabic and English brand works.

  • Miami and South FloridaAbout 1,200 multinational companies run their Latin American headquarters from Miami-Dade, according to the Beacon Council. If you sell across the Americas, have native speakers check the name and tagline in Spanish and, for Brazil, Portuguese before the logo is drawn.
  • Huntsville, Knoxville and ChattanoogaNASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville has more than 6,000 people, UT Knoxville partners with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and in 2010 Chattanooga’s EPB became the first US provider of gig-speed internet community-wide. Selling to research or tech buyers? Plan the brand for proposals too.
  • Greenville and BoiseBMW’s Plant Spartanburg in Greer, close to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, employs more than 11,000 people. Micron, started in a Boise basement in 1978, plans two memory fabs in Boise. If you supply plants like these, test the logo on safety gear, vehicles and signs, not only on screen.
  • One name, four registrationsThe SBA says most small businesses try to use the same name for their entity, trademark, DBA and domain, though it is not normally required. Check all four before the logo is drawn. In Pennsylvania, corporations and fictitious names are filed with the Bureau of Corporations and Charitable Organizations in Harrisburg.
  • Federal trademark: optional, but nationwideUSPTO registration is your choice. With no registration you rely on common-law rights from use, which may only be enforceable where you use the mark. A federal registration covers the whole US and its territories and allows the ® symbol. The USPTO database does not show common-law marks, so search the web too.

Questions founders ask

Do you work with businesses in Miami?

Yes, remotely. I have no office in Miami: the work runs on calls in your working hours and shared files. Miami brands often have to work in more than one language, so tell me on the first call which languages your customers use. Before you commit to a name or tagline, have a native speaker check it in each of them.

Do I need to register my trademark with the USPTO?

The USPTO says it is your choice: you can rely on common-law rights from using the mark, or file for state, federal or international registration. The USPTO also says a federal registration can be the basis for filing for protection in other countries, which matters if you plan to sell abroad. I don’t file trademarks: your lawyer files the application, and I hand over clean files for it.

Is registering my LLC or DBA enough to protect the name?

Not on its own. The SBA describes four separate registrations: entity name, trademark, DBA and domain name, and each is legally independent. An entity name can protect the name at state level, a trademark can protect it nationwide, and a DBA gives no legal protection by itself, though it may be legally required. My naming service includes a preliminary USPTO search; the full clearance and the filing are for your lawyer.

Which US time zones do you work in?

Calls happen in your working hours, on Eastern or Pacific time. Standard time in the US and its territories is observed in nine time zones, according to the US Naval Observatory, and Eastern standard time is three hours ahead of Pacific. The free 30-minute call and the weekly check-ins are booked inside your working day, whether your team is in Miami, Harrisburg or Los Angeles.

How long does a brand identity take?

It depends on the scope: logo design usually takes 2–4 weeks, a brand identity 4–10 weeks and a rebrand 6–12 weeks. Naming is a separate service and takes 2–4 weeks.

How much does branding cost for a US company?

It depends on the scope: how many markets and languages the brand covers and how many applications it needs on day one. After a free 30-minute call you get a fixed written proposal with one price, the timeline and the deliverables. The article “How much does a brand identity cost in 2026?” under Related reading explains typical US market ranges.

We are a US company expanding to the UAE or Saudi Arabia. Can you help?

Yes. For the UAE and Saudi Arabia I design Arabic and English versions of the name, logo and type so they work as one brand, including right-to-left layouts.
