Brand identity for Richmond firms,
planned remotely on Eastern time.

If you are looking for a brand designer in Richmond, I work remotely with businesses there on brand identity, rebranding and logos, on Eastern time. For a consulting, finance or software firm I plan the brand for proposals and pitch decks first; for a shop in Shockoe Slip or Jackson Ward, for a sign the city may need to approve. After a free 30-minute call you get a fixed written proposal with one price, the timeline and the deliverables. A brand identity takes 4–10 weeks and a rebrand 6–12 weeks.

Proposals downtown, signs in Shockoe Slip: branding in Richmond

Richmond is Virginia’s capital and home to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, which serves the Fifth District: Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, most of West Virginia and the Carolinas. The Census Bureau puts the city at 237,257 residents in July 2025. In the Richmond metro area the BLS counted about 123,600 jobs in professional and business services, 113,800 in government and 60,000 in financial activities in August 2026 (preliminary). The Greater Richmond Partnership lists six Fortune 500 headquarters in the region, among them CarMax, Altria, Markel Group and Dominion Energy.

Branding is also taught here. VCU’s Brandcenter, a two-year graduate program in art direction, copywriting, creative brand management and strategy, opened in 1996 as the VCU Adcenter and took its current name in 2008. Whoever you hire, local or remote, ask to see work in your own sector. People keep filing to start businesses: the Census Bureau counted about 4,750 business applications in the city in 2025, compared with about 3,330 in 2019 (applications peaked at about 5,960 in 2021).

I work remotely as a brand identity designer for Richmond businesses and have no office in the city. For a consulting, finance or software firm downtown or in Scott’s Addition, the brand has to hold up in a proposal and a pitch deck before it ever reaches a sign. For a shop in Shockoe Slip or Jackson Ward, the sign may need the city’s approval. If you are not sure what the work should cover, read what a brand identity includes.

  • Built for proposals, not only the websiteProfessional and business services is the metro’s second-largest job sector in the BLS count, behind only trade, transportation and utilities. If you sell consulting, legal, IT or financial services in Richmond, plan the brand for proposals, reports and pitch decks first.
  • Check the name against SCC recordsA Virginia LLC name must be distinguishable on the State Corporation Commission’s records from other LLCs, corporations, limited partnerships and business trusts, including reserved names; words like “LLC” don’t count toward the difference. Search the SCC’s records for your name before the logo is drawn.
  • Trading under another nameIn Virginia, anyone doing business under an assumed or fictitious name files a certificate with the clerk of the State Corporation Commission. The same law bars using such a name to intentionally misrepresent where a business is from or located. Pick a trade name that doesn’t suggest you are somewhere you are not.
  • A city license in the right nameRichmond requires a business license every year, and a new business must get one within 30 days of opening. If your trade name is not registered with the SCC, the city can only issue the license in the name of the licensee, and each location needs its own license.
  • Signs in Old and Historic DistrictsIn districts such as Shockoe Slip, Jackson Ward and Monument Avenue, exterior changes need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Commission of Architectural Review or its staff. Its standards say signs should not be lit from inside, and LED and plasma display signs will not be approved there.
  • English first, Spanish secondThe Census Bureau finds 12.1% of residents aged 5 and over speak a language other than English at home, most of them Spanish: 18,073 people, about half of whom speak English less than “very well” (2020–2024). If you serve Spanish-speaking customers, plan Spanish versions of key signs and forms.

Questions founders ask

Do you have an office or a team in Richmond?

No. I work remotely with businesses in Richmond: the free 30-minute call and the weekly check-ins are booked in your Eastern working hours, and your local printer or sign maker works from the files I hand over.

Will my sign be approved in Shockoe Slip or Jackson Ward?

If your shop is in one of the city’s Old and Historic Districts, a sign that meets the Commission of Architectural Review’s standards can be approved by its staff. Those standards put projecting signs at least 8 feet above the sidewalk and no more than 4 feet out, keep permanent window signs to 20% of the glass and say signs should not be lit from inside. Tell me on the first call where your sign will go, so the logo works within those limits. The application to the city and the sign itself are handled by you and your sign maker.

Are you a freelance brand designer or an agency?

I am a brand designer and the founder of Wolfpixel, and I lead a design team for founders in the US and the Middle East, with 350+ projects behind us. If you are comparing a freelance brand designer, a brand identity designer and the studios in Richmond, compare the terms too. Mine: a free 30-minute call, one fixed written price, two revision rounds per phase and full ownership of the final files.

Do you work as a rebranding specialist when a Richmond firm merges or changes its name?

Yes, remotely. A merger usually calls for a full rebrand, which takes 6–12 weeks; a new name is a separate naming service (2–4 weeks) that runs before the identity work. If the name stays and only the look has dated, a refresh takes 3–6 weeks. A new trading name also means paperwork for your lawyer: in Virginia an assumed name is filed with the State Corporation Commission, and if the trade name is not registered with the SCC, the City of Richmond can only issue your business license in the licensee’s own name. Plan the name, the license and the new sign together.

Do I need a Virginia trademark or a federal one?

Ask your lawyer. In Virginia the State Corporation Commission handles LLC names, assumed names and state trademark applications, and the USPTO says a state registration creates rights in that state only. A USPTO registration covers the whole US and its territories and lets you use the ® symbol. I don’t file trademarks: your lawyer files, and I hand over clean files. The naming service includes a preliminary USPTO search.

How much does branding cost for a Richmond business?

It depends on the scope: how many places the brand has to work on day one, from proposals and pitch decks to signs and packaging. After a free 30-minute call you get a fixed written proposal with one price, the timeline and the deliverables, and the price never changes mid-project. For typical US market ranges, see the cost guide under Related reading below.

Is the work on this page from Richmond?

No. I picked my closest real work to the firms this page is about, and none of it is presented as a Richmond client: Secuara, a cybersecurity brand in San Francisco; Core.hr, an HR software rebrand; JurisLex, a law firm; and Pinvet, a finance management brand.
