A brand designer for Sharjah,
with both scripts drawn together.
If you are looking for a brand designer in Sharjah, plan the name and the shop sign first. Sharjah’s Economic Development Department (SEDD) asks for a trade name with an Arabic meaning, except for company branches, and takes sign requests only through calligraphers it has approved. So for a new identity, a rebrand or an Arabic–English logo, I draw both scripts together from the first sketch, remotely. Calls happen in UAE time (GMT+4); after a free 30-minute call you get a fixed written proposal in USD or AED.

What shapes a Sharjah brand: industry, culture and sign rules
Sharjah is the third largest emirate and the only one on both coasts, the Arabian Gulf in the west and the Gulf of Oman in the east, where Khor Fakkan is its largest town on that coast. The Sharjah Census 2025, announced in June 2026, counted 2,135,888 people: 234,431 Emirati citizens (11%) and about 1.9 million residents of other nationalities. In 2023 the non-oil sector made up about 98% of GDP, and trade, manufacturing and construction together about half. SEDD counts 19 industrial areas plus Al Sajaa, and the emirate has three ports. Its free zones include Hamriyah (set up in 1995), the Sharjah Airport International Free Zone (SAIF Zone), SPark next to University City, Shams for media and SPC, which calls itself the world’s first publishing free zone. UNESCO named Sharjah World Book Capital for 2019.
So one Sharjah brand may have to work on a factory label, a container leaving Khor Fakkan, a shop sign SEDD has approved and a startup’s app, for customers who read Arabic, English or both. Whether you are a new SPark startup that needs a brand identity designer or an established trader planning a rebrand, the work starts with the name and the sign. For the UAE I design Arabic and English versions of the name, logo and type so they work as one brand, including right-to-left layouts. I do this work remotely, without an office in Sharjah: we review sketches, the sign lockup and label mockups together on calls in UAE time. The bilingual brand guide shows how I pair the two scripts.
- The trade name needs an Arabic meaningSEDD asks for a trade name with an Arabic meaning, except for company branches. It bars landmarks such as Sharjah or Dubai and UAE-registered trademarks you are not authorized to use. Its trade-name page also bars country and capital names; its FAQ allows them only with that country’s embassy or consulate approval.
- Shop signs go through an approved calligrapherSEDD takes sign requests only through calligraphers it has approved; its July 2026 FAQ sets a four-foot height, in line with neighboring signs, with extra fees above it. Its March 2026 English FAQ also asked for the name to match the license, set 60% Arabic and 40% English. Confirm current rules with your calligrapher.
- A logo that differs from the name needs a trademarkIf the logo on a Sharjah sign differs from your trade name, SEDD asks for its trademark certificate. The Ministry of Economy and Tourism decides within 90 days of filing, then publishes accepted marks for a 30-day objection period before issuing the certificate, so have your lawyer file once the artwork is final.
- Promotions need a SEDD permit firstSEDD’s July 2026 FAQ says any ad campaign or promotional offer needs a permit in advance; its March 2026 English FAQ lists the campaign request and advertising materials in Arabic. So if a launch offer is planned, give its artwork an Arabic version that matches the brand, not a last-minute translation.
- Factories and an east-coast portSEDD targets pharmaceuticals, building materials, chemicals and plastics, agriculture and food, and machinery. Gulftainer operates the commercial terminal at Khor Fakkan, on the Gulf of Oman outside the Strait of Hormuz. So a factory brand may need pallet labels, cartons and Arabic–English data sheets, not just a sign.
- A city that celebrates Arabic lettersUNESCO named Sharjah Cultural Capital of the Arab World in 1998, and the emirate’s Department of Culture holds the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial, whose 12th edition opened on October 7, 2026. In this setting the Arabic half of a logo is not a translation job: I draw it with the same care as the English.

Questions founders ask
Do you meet clients in Sharjah, or is it all remote?
It is all remote. I have no office in Sharjah; we work through calls, shared files and weekly check-ins, booked in your company’s working week in UAE time (GMT+4). One thing to plan for: Government of Sharjah departments work Monday to Thursday, with Friday to Sunday as the official weekend, so leave time for that while your trade name or sign permit is pending.
Can my Sharjah trade name be an English word?
Not as a rule. SEDD calls for a trade name with an Arabic meaning, and its July 2026 FAQ allows foreign names only for company branches, so check with SEDD before designing around an English word. It bars landmarks such as Sharjah, UAE-registered trademarks you are not authorized to use, and country or capital names (its FAQ allows them only with that country’s embassy or consulate approval). My naming service gives name ideas, a shortlist, domain and social checks and a preliminary trademark search (including the UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism); SEDD alone rules on the Arabic meaning.
What does SEDD check before it permits my shop sign?
The request goes through a calligrapher SEDD has approved, the sign keeps to a four-foot height in line with neighboring signs (extra fees apply above it), and a logo that differs from your trade name needs its trademark registration certificate. SEDD’s English FAQ (March 2026) also lists the trade name matching your license, the name set 60% in Arabic and 40% in English, and the mark shown as registered; confirm the current rules with your calligrapher. As your visual identity designer, I plan the sign lockup around them and hand over clean artwork.
Can you brand a company licensed in Hamriyah, SPark or Shams?
Yes. On the first call we check whether your license comes from SEDD or a free zone, since the name and sign rules above are SEDD’s. Hamriyah Free Zone, set up in 1995, lists oil and gas, food, manufacturing, maritime industry and logistics among its sectors. SPark, next to University City, was founded in 2016 and focuses on advanced manufacturing, healthcare, environmental tech and smart, autonomous transport. Shams, set up in 2017, is a free zone for media and creative businesses, freelancers included. A logo takes 2–4 weeks; a full identity for a lab, a warehouse or a studio, 4–10 weeks.
I need a rebranding specialist for an older Sharjah company. Where do I start?
With the name and the sign. A rebrand takes 6–12 weeks and a brand refresh 3–6 weeks. If the trade name changes, SEDD’s steps include approval from its Trade Names Section and a notice in a local daily newspaper for 7 days. And because a sign logo that differs from your trade name needs its trademark certificate, your lawyer should file the new mark as soon as the artwork is final.
How much does branding cost for a Sharjah business?
It depends on the scope: a logo, a full identity, packaging or a rebrand, and whether the sign and the labels both need Arabic and English. After a free 30-minute call you get a fixed written proposal in USD or AED with one price, the timeline and the deliverables, and the price never changes mid-project.
Why these four projects on a Sharjah page?
They match the sectors above, not the location, and none is presented as a Sharjah client. ROMO Logistics (transport) fits Khor Fakkan’s port and Hamriyah’s logistics park, Astrix Builders (construction, with hoardings and fleet) the construction sector, ZAYAN (solar) SPark’s sustainability focus, and ChocoBloom (chocolate packaging) the agriculture and food industry SEDD targets.
